Exhibition by One of Melbourne’s Best Artists is Coming to AGWA

  • June 11, 2024
One of Rone's artworks from the Time exhibition

An unmissable exhibition by one of Melbourne’s best artists; Rone is coming to AGWA for a limited time! This immersive art experience will allow you to step into a moment suspended in time and get lost in the incredible artworks. From the 1st of July until the end of September, enjoy TIME: an exhibition that breathes life into a lost era of Australian history. After selling out his Melbourne exhibition, Rone is bringing new installations exclusively for Perth audiences to enjoy!

The Exhibition

TIME has taken over three years to create and is Rone’s only exhibition in 2024. Better yet this is the first time the Centenary Galleries will feature an immersive experience and the first time they have been fully opened in nearly 20 years! The exhibition will take over 12 rooms, on both floors, each hosting immersive installations with visuals supported by a soundscape. With expanded staging and a new room, exclusive to Perth! Giving you the chance to experience the historic space like never before, as you walk, breathe, and live among remnants of mid-century Australia. A truly incredible exhibition not to be missed!

The Experience

As you experience the exhibition you will be lead through the rooms following a storyline that takes you on a journey, for the lifelong search for beauty in decay. Inviting you to consider time and how it has worn away so much. Peeking through the peeling paint and cracked ceilings, life persists. Faces search out for something and ghostly illusions from the past meld with mirrors into the future. Like all things, TIME is impermanent. But for a season, it invites you to exist in the same moment.

The artist himself explains the experience as “… an open-ended narrative – there’s no right or wrong way to experience the space, just trails that I hope visitors will pick up. People make their own story, and every person will experience it differently.”

Part immersive art installation and sensory engagement, the exhibition will also include immersive dinners. As well as a RONE store and a fully designed bar space where visitors can linger amongst the art and dive into the experience through several imaginative offerings!

About The Artist – Rone

The man behind this amazing exhibition is Melbourne-based artist Tyrone ‘Rone’ Wright. Who over the past two decades has established an international reputation for his distinctive large-scale portraits and multimedia installations. Known for his groundbreaking projects Empire (2019), Omega (2017), and Empty (2016), which have all drawn huge audiences and gained international media attention. Breaking free from the confines of the traditional gallery model, it has seen his work held in permanent collections at the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria. He is also a co-founder of Everfresh Studio, an artist collective based in Collingwood, Australia.

Together with his collaborators, Rone orchestrates the construction of these immersive installations, reminiscent of movie sets. From designing the furniture to placing cobwebs and dust, he orchestrates it all. The result is an immersive experience of sight, sound, and atmosphere. As carefully crafted soundscapes intertwine with dynamic lighting sequences.
