The restaurateur behind Perth’s best asian bites is opened a new spot in Freo this week! Moon & Mary features exciting Asian fusion food and a modern approach to wine and cocktails. Consisting of a bespoke build with three venues under the one roof, including modern Asian dining (The Dining Room), a casual “beer garden” (The Rec Yard) and a speakeasy/distillery (Best Behaviour).
Perth Restaurateur Jacquie Chan
Perth entrepreneur Jacquie Chan, is the genius behind Miss Chow’s, Lucy Luu, Lena’s Bar & Eats and Lygon Lane. The exciting new restaurant is part of an impressive success story that began with the opening of Miss Chow’s Claremont in 2015. Moon & Mary is Chan’s eighth restaurant and is the restaurateur’s way of honouring the pioneering days of WA’s very first Chinese settlers. A figure whose life in Perth and Fremantle has become part of urban legend. Moon Chow built a life for himself in the fledgling Swan River colony as a master carpenter, joiner and boat builder.
The Venue
Moon & Mary is home to three venues under one roof, including The Dining Room. An elevated area offering a seafood-focused menu with an emphasis on aged and cured dishes. Balancing sweet, salty and sour flavours, delish! Hidden within this elegant setting are two private experience rooms that were once cells with their original features preserved. These unique spaces create a blend of history and luxury, offering an unparalleled dining experience.
Next up is Best Behaviour, which is not just a speakeasy bar but also an in-house distillery. Distilling premium spirits including Vodka, Gin, Spiced Rum, and Whiskey. Giving guests the opportunity to take home a bottles, bringing a taste of the unique distillery experience with them.
The Rec Yard features heritage walls bearing the etchings of past convicts in the relaxed, sunlit courtyard. This unique touch adds a layer of intrigue to the charming blend of history and tranquillity. The menu for Moon & Mary has been designed by executive chef Aldren Teo, with the day-to-day running of the kitchen by Freo local and head chef Zane Morrison. Who was Born in Singapore and raised in Fremantle, with a strong love for South-East Asian cuisine and huge passion for cooking.
