Why a Waterwise Garden is the Way to Go

Let’s be honest, nobody wants to be a garden slave! Waterwise gardening isn’t just about being eco-smart (although you do get brownie points for that!). It’s about being life-smart. Crafting an outdoor haven that looks amazing without demanding you spend every spare minute sweating over a shovel. Especially in our glorious sunshine, who wants to be stuck tending to the garden when you could be at the beach, barbecuing or grabbing brunch?

Tips for Effortless Gardening

Want the secret sauce to effortless, waterwise gardening? Here are your golden rules:

Get Planning

Hold up! Before you even think about plants, take the time to plan your garden design. Consider your lifestyle, the amount of time you want to dedicate to gardening and the overall look you want to achieve. Think about zones in your garden – areas for relaxation, entertainment and play. Good design is the foundation of low maintenance.

Group plant types together with similar water needs and think about your current irrigation system, does it need repairs or more efficient upgrades?

The best time to plan your new waterwise garden is in Autumn and Winter, where the rains will help establish your new plants to ensure the best survival rate through the next summer.

Soil TLC

Healthy soil is crucial for healthy, low-maintenance plants. Happy soil equals happy plants, which equals happy you (with less work!). Improve your soil by adding compost and organic matter. This makes your soil a water-holding superhero, meaning less watering for you and plants that will thrive. Sandy soil is commonly found in WA but it’s best to check your soil type before planning your garden.

Mulch is Your Best Friend

Mulch is basically magic in a bag. Apply a generous and even layer of coarse mulch around your plants. 5-10cm thickness should do it! It’s the ultimate weed-blocker, keeps the soil moist and makes your garden beds look instantly polished. This simple step significantly cuts down on weeding and watering chores.

Efficient Watering

Waterwise plants are drought-tolerant but they still need water, especially when establishing. But let’s be smart about it! By programming your irrigation correctly and regularly checking your system, you’ll be able to nurture your garden, while using water efficiently. For extra convenience consider installing a weather-based irrigation controller. These smart systems use local weather data to adapt your watering in real time, making them an easy way to save water.

Garden Designs to Inspire You

Stuck for ideas? We’ve rounded up a few of our favourite garden designs:

Native Wonderland

Want the birds, the bees and to be the envy of the neighbourhood? Grow plants that are best suited for our climate and see them thrive before your eyes. Native plants are available at most nurseries and have a variety of flowering seasons to keep your garden looking fabulous all year around. Create a wonderland for wildlife, and you, with layers of native groundcovers, shrubs and trees, such as the stunning ‘Silver Princess’ Eucalyptus Caesia.

Coastal Hangout

Think beach club vibes in your backyard. Hardy, wind resistant natives like coastal pig face, dianella, scaevola and a Perth favourite, weeping peppermint trees are your go-to plants. Paired with gravel paths, maybe some shells, and breezy outdoor furniture – instant coastal chill zone, practically zero maintenance.

Amalfi Vibes

Dreaming of a Mediterranean escape? Bring the Amalfi coast, Tuscany or French Riviera to your own backyard! Think productive plants like lemon or olive trees, contrasting foliage of native coastal rosemary and fragrant flowers of the popular and hardy lavender. Add in a mosaic bird bath, an outdoor lounge and pop of colour with a Bougainvillea shrub to finish the look.
