After four years in the making, a hotly-anticipated subterranean Japanese bar and restaurant has opened in Brookfield Place in the City. Get acquainted with Papi Katsu, the fine-tuned, rule-breaking Japanese restaurant from the fastidious Sesh Mafia team where the focus is on the fun! This high-end Japanese dining destination doesn’t take itself too seriously, provides service that is world-class, ensures the sake is always free flowing and the seafood is as fresh as it gets!
Let’s talk food! Papi Katsu is all about upending traditional Japanese cuisine with their own
interpretations. Their share-style menu focuses on local and seasonal ingredients with fresh Australian seafood sourced from local fishmongers each morning. Try out some of their daily sashimi plates including prawn katsu open sandwiches, a range of temaki and even local yabbies, poached and served with milk bread, yum!
If you’re after something a bit bigger, their larger plates are also designed to be shared and include several impressive dishes. Saikyo miso glazed toothfish served with shark bay clam, ikura and roasted fish bone beurre monte; roasted duck breast and maitake mushrooms finished with mandarin oil.
Wanting to take your dining experience to the next level? Try out their $750 one-kilogram steak of the highest grade A5 Japanese wagyu beef cooked over the charcoal yakitori! Or pre-order an insane amount of caviar, a whole roasted duck or even a super-sized lobster when booking. Perfect extras for a special occasion.
Drinks
What’s going on behind the bar? Expect a liberal drinks menu inspired by the clean and precise nature of Japanese service and culture developed by Sesh Mafia’s master mixologist. Highball and Martini lovers listen up, Papi Katsu features a dedicated menu to both that are elevated with clear block ice and ice carving. These are complemented by a range of Japanese lagers on tap, local wines, and a 25-strong sake list.
Sesh Mafia, the team behind Papi Katsu have been working together in the dining and bar industry for decades and quite frankly just wanted to have fun. That’s where this new venture comes from, with a tongue-in-cheek name, phenomenal menu, cyberpunk-inspired interiors and world-class service, they’re making sure you’re in for a good time.
Venue
Taking a look inside the space, it has been transformed into a 120-capacity dining room, bringing the atmosphere of Japanese cyberpunk to the subterranean space with pops of neon pink and blue imitating the bright lights of downtown Tokyo. From timber tables and seats to the bespoke lighting, fixtures and murals in the three 20-person private dining rooms, everything has been created specifically for Papi Katsu. The highlight of the space is at the rear of the restaurant, a 4.5-metre timber Omakase table will offer an intimate view of the skilled chefs preparing the high end hybrid omakase menu, an experience you have to try out!
